I run in a lot of different environments, including my neighborhood. I see a lot of drivers looking directly at their phones and driving distracted. Being aware of the environment around me has always been important but there have been many times I can't hear the traffic while I'm listening to music. Likewise, I enjoy music on the trails but don't like using headphones for safety reasons. Furthermore, being emersed in nature is part of the experience so blocking it out underminds my idea of what it means to trail run. For these reasons I was hopeful that the Trekz Airs could help me keep the music that drives me forward on runs but doesn't hinder my situational awareness.

Aftershokz promotes the idea of "Be Open" because their headphones use bone conduction and as a result, they don't block your ears. YEP, they don't go in your ears! If you're like me, I never tried bone conduction earphones, in fact, I have a pretty long history of using traditional Bluetooth headphones.

If you notice from the picture above the Trekz Airs are not bulky. They are light and after wearing them I can easily forget they are there. They give the feel of a well-made product; I can flex them in my hands without the fear of snapping them in half.

Here are some other things I noticed about the Trekz Airs
  1. Battery duration is excellent. I can go an entire week without needing to recharge. Aftershokz states they have a 6-hour battery life which I can reaffirm as accurate. As a slower runner, I really appreciate my earphones making it through long runs.
  2. I went on a trail run and heard the birds chirping while listening to music. I really needed the tunes to push through the uphill. I knew where the other hikers were without unexpectedly running onto them.
  3. The sound quality is excellent! It's really easy to turn the volume up and down or even skip a track on my playlist. Also, the headphones do not bounce during runs and the Bluetooth connects immediately to my iPhone without any issues.
Needless to say, these are now my go-to headphones for running. I love that they just don't improve my situational awareness in one setting, but in others like the supermarket, and that they are a viable option for a professional office setting. I enjoy playing some music or podcasts as I work.
